Terms
Terms of Service
These terms set out the deal between you and us when you buy and use Legible. We've kept them as plain as we can. If anything is unclear, email hello@getlegible.app and we'll explain.
Who you're buying from
Legible is provided by PF Creative Ltd, a company registered in the United Kingdom ("we", "us", "our"). Payments are processed by Paddle, who acts as the merchant of record. By buying Legible you also enter into Paddle's buyer terms.
What you're buying
A license to install and use Legible (our native Mac reader for markdown vaults) on the number of Macs specified at the time of purchase. We call this the "Activation Limit", currently one per license unless stated otherwise. Your license includes:
- All updates released during the 12 months following your purchase. You keep using whatever version you've installed forever; we don't take that away. After 12 months, new releases require a renewal at the then-current price.
- Support via email at hello@getlegible.app.
How activation works
After purchase, we email a license key to the address you gave Paddle. You enter the key in Legible's Preferences to activate the app on a Mac. The app contacts our license server on launch and periodically afterwards to confirm the key is valid and to record which Macs are using it. You can deactivate a Mac at any time from Preferences to free up an activation slot.
We may revoke a license if it has been issued in error, if it's used outside the Activation Limit in a way that suggests sharing or resale, or if a chargeback is processed without first contacting us. We will contact you before any revocation that isn't strictly automated.
Refunds
You can request a full refund within 14 days of purchase, no questions asked. Details on the Refund Policy page.
Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Share, resell, or sublicense your license key.
- Reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the source code of the app (except where this restriction is prohibited by applicable law).
- Use the app to do anything illegal, or to process data you don't have the right to process.
- Attempt to interfere with, overload, or probe our license server or any other Legible infrastructure.
Your content stays yours
Legible reads markdown files from a folder you point it at. The contents of those files (your notes, your vault, your writing) remain entirely yours. We never transmit them off your machine, and we don't claim any ownership, license, or right of access to them. See the Privacy Policy for the full picture.
Our intellectual property
We retain all rights, title, and interest in the Legible app, the Legible name and wordmark, this website, and the underlying source code. Your license grants you the right to use the app, not to copy it, redistribute it, or build derivatives of it.
"As is"
Legible is provided to you "as is" and "as available". We make no warranties beyond those that cannot be excluded under UK consumer law. We do not warrant that the app will be error-free, that it will meet every requirement you have, or that every update will preserve compatibility with every third-party editor, tool, or vault layout.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for any other liability that cannot be excluded by law.
Limitation of liability
Subject to the paragraph above, our total liability to you for any loss or damage arising under or in connection with your use of Legible is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months prior to the event giving rise to the claim. We are not liable for any indirect, consequential, or special losses; for loss of data, revenue, or business; or for any loss caused by your failure to keep your own backups.
Legible is a reader. We strongly recommend keeping your own backups of any notes that matter to you.
Termination
Either of us can end this agreement at any time. You can stop using Legible and ask us to delete your license record (note that this invalidates the key). We may suspend or terminate your license for material breach of these terms, particularly the acceptable-use clauses, after giving you reasonable notice and a chance to fix the problem. Sections of these terms that by their nature should survive termination (intellectual property, disclaimers, limitation of liability, governing law) will continue to apply.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms occasionally. If we make material changes, we'll update the "Last updated" date and, where the change affects your rights, we'll email you before the change takes effect. Your continued use of Legible after a change means you accept the new terms.
Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any dispute that cannot be resolved by friendly conversation will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales. If you live in another country, you may also be entitled to bring proceedings in your local courts and to rely on local consumer protections that cannot be excluded by contract.
